San Francisco Cohousing

San Francisco Cohousing is creating a supportive community of private residences and shared facilities, to be designed, developed and managed collaboratively by its members

We intend to create homes for our community members in San Francisco that will provide mutual support and rich social engagement as well as personal autonomy and empowerment. We aim to build a place that fosters deep, reliable relationships instead of the feelings of disconnection, and isolation that afflict so many of us. We expect that these homes will cost about the same as other new homes in San Francisco.

An autonomous community in one place

Private homes artfully combined with welcoming shared spaces create an autonomous community in a single safe place

Stronger social connection, social engagement and empowerment

The antidote to isolation is built in to our cohousing. Regular shared activities and the proximity of our private homes allows community members to choose to meet for regular evening meals in their communal space and to enjoy life in each others’ company. They collaborate in non-hierarchical, consensus-based groups to manage and maintain their homes.

Mutual support

Community members agree on the types and amounts of support that they will give each other so that they can support each other by sharing childcare responsibilities or by providing help during illness or incapacity. Extra accommodation available in the community can be used by specialized caregivers if necessary.

Shared resources and reduced costs

Community members may agree to share facilities (such as a laundry room), tools or vehicles. Sharing is made easy by the culture of collaboration in cohousing communities. Sharing can also reduce costs.

A safe and secure place to thrive

Surrounded by a community of about fifty other active adults and their families, in a place designed and built to be secure and safe, community members can relax and enjoy themselves.
